| Historical
Sites Perhaps the
most famous site hereabouts, often called the jewel in Cornwall's crown,
is St
Michael's Mount. Home to the
St Aubyn family for over 300 years although now in the care of the National
Trust, the Mount offers a medieval castle, an exotic garden
clinging to the steep flanks, and an ancient harbour with shops and restaurants. Start to delve
into the history of the area around South West Cornwall and it is amazing
how many notable characters either originated in or left their mark on
the region. One such was Guglielmo
Marconi who just over one hundred years ago made the first transatlantic
wireless from Poldhu Cove, not ten miles from Tregathenan.
The Marconi
Monument and recently opened small museum are easily reached from
Mullion and there is a superb circular walk to be had taking in Poldhu,
Mullion Cove and Mullion itself. Make
time for a bite to eat in the Old Inn at Mullion. |
